Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude Code isn't included in Claude's free plan. The cheapest way in is Claude Pro: $20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front). Max costs from $100/month. You can also skip the subscription and pay API rates through a Console account. Source: claude.com/pricing, read 2026-10-16.
That's the whole answer. The rest of this page covers what each plan gets you, how the limits work, and when the free alternative makes more sense.

How the limits actually work
Anthropic doesn't publish a message count. Per the pricing page, every plan's usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans have weekly limits on top. Claude Code and your normal chats draw from the same pool, so a long refactor in the morning means less chat in the afternoon. When you hit the limit you can wait, upgrade, or turn on usage credits (paid plans) and keep going at API rates.
Our take
If you code more than a couple of hours a week, Pro is the price of a lunch and you'll find out quickly whether you need Max. If you only want to kick the tyres, start with Codex's free tier, which is free, then come back. We haven't put Claude Code through our coding test set yet. Its 8.5/10 is an editorial rating (see the coding ranking).
